Pune Metro Adds Two New Stations
Posted On July 11, 2025

Pune's urban landscape is continually transforming with the rapid expansion of its Metro network. While the Pune Metro has made significant strides in operationalizing its Phase 1 corridors, the most recent impactful additions to the network have been the full operationalization of the Aqua Line (Line 2) from Vanaz to Ramwadi, which was completed with the inauguration of its final section, Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi, in March 2024, and the full operationalization of the Purple Line (Line 1) with the inauguration of its final underground section from District Court to Swargate in September 2024. These crucial extensions have brought a new level of connectivity to Pune's burgeoning population, integrating key residential, commercial, and educational hubs.
The Pune Metro project, overseen by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), is designed to significantly alleviate the city's notorious traffic congestion and provide a sustainable, efficient, and comfortable mode of public transport. Phase 1 of the project comprises two main lines- the Purple Line (Line 1) connecting PCMC Bhavan to Swargate, and the Aqua Line (Line 2) running from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Both lines have been progressively opened in sections since March 2022, with the final segments becoming operational in 2024, marking a major milestone in the city's urban mobility infrastructure.
The full operationalization of the Aqua Line (Line 2) in March 2024 with the opening of the Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch brought three new stations into service- Bund Garden, Kalyani Nagar, and Ramwadi. This extension covers a distance of approximately 5.94 km and is particularly significant as it extends connectivity to the eastern parts of the city, including areas close to major IT hubs and residential zones. The Ramwadi station, now the eastern terminus of the Aqua Line, serves as a crucial point for commuters from areas like Wagholi and beyond, providing them with a direct link to the central business districts and other parts of Pune. The integration of these stations has immediately enhanced accessibility for thousands of daily commuters.
Following this, the Purple Line (Line 1) saw its most complex section, the underground stretch from District Court to Swargate, inaugurated in September 2024. This segment added three vital underground stations- Mandai, Budhwar Peth, and Swargate. The Swargate station, now the southern terminus of the Purple Line, is poised to become a major multimodal transport hub, integrating with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus stand and the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus stand. This integration is expected to offer seamless connectivity for intercity and intracity commuters, significantly boosting metro ridership from the city's southern and central parts. The underground nature of this stretch presented considerable engineering challenges, necessitating innovative construction techniques in a densely populated urban area.
The impact of these operational extensions has been immediate and substantial, reflected in the surging ridership numbers. Before these full operationalizations, Pune Metro's daily passenger count averaged around 1 lakh. However, following the completion of these segments in 2024, Pune Metro's daily ridership has witnessed a significant surge, frequently crossing the 1.5 to 1.6 lakh mark on weekdays, and even exceeding 2 lakh on special occasions or when road traffic is disrupted, such as during festivals like Ganesh Utsav or Palkhi processions. The May 2025 figures showed Pune Metro hitting ₹7.72 crore in revenue and carrying 47.62 lakh passengers, indicating consistent growth and increasing public preference for metro services. This clearly demonstrates that the expanded network is effectively serving as a viable and preferred mode of transport for a growing number of Puneites.
Looking ahead, Pune Metro's expansion plans are even more ambitious, with several extensions and new lines in various stages of approval and construction. Just in June 2025, the Union Cabinet approved Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2, which includes two critical extensions to the existing Aqua Line (Line 2)- Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B). These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 new stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs and key IT hubs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. This Phase 2 is projected to be completed within four years, and upon its completion, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated to reach 0.96 lakh in 2027, eventually rising to 3.49 lakh by 2057.
Furthermore, extensions to the Purple Line (Line 1) are also actively underway. Work has commenced on the PCMC to Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti) elevated extension (Line 1A), which will add 4 new stations over 4.51 km by 2027. Additionally, the Union Cabinet approved the Swargate to Katraj underground extension (Line 1B) in August 2024, spanning 5.46 km with three new underground stations, projected to be operational by 2029. These extensions aim to further enhance north-south connectivity and integrate with proposed multimodal hubs.
Beyond these extensions of existing lines, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is also implementing Pune Metro Line 3 (Hinjewadi - District Court), a 23.3 km elevated corridor with 23 stations, being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and expected to be completed by 2026. This line will serve the massive IT hub of Hinjewadi, further strengthening connectivity to core city areas. The collective progress on these various phases and extensions underscores Pune's commitment to building a robust, integrated, and sustainable public transportation network to meet the demands of its burgeoning population and economic growth. The strategic addition of new stations and lines is set to redefine urban commuting in Pune, making it a more connected and livable city.
